Frequently asked questions

What is the 3-2-1 backup rule?

Keep three copies of your data, on two different types of media, with one copy off-site. The extended 3-2-1-1-0 rule adds one immutable or offline copy and zero errors in verified restore tests.

What is the difference between RPO and RTO?

RPO is how much data you can afford to lose, measured as the time since the last good backup. RTO is how long a system can be unavailable before the impact becomes unacceptable. Both should be agreed per application with the business.

How do immutable backups protect against ransomware?

Immutable backups cannot be changed or deleted until their retention lock expires, even by an administrator. If ransomware or an attacker reaches your backup system, those copies stay intact and give you a clean point to recover from.

Is cloud backup enough on its own?

Cloud backup makes a good off-site copy, but restoring large volumes over the internet can be slow. Most organisations combine a local copy for quick restores with a cloud or second-site copy for disasters.

Can backups be kept inside the UAE?

Yes. You can keep backup copies on-premises, at a second UAE site or with a cloud provider that offers UAE data centres. Check with your compliance team which data must stay in the country.
