Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between NAS and SAN?

A NAS shares files over the network and is simple to set up and manage. A SAN presents block storage to servers, with higher performance and lower latency for databases and virtualisation. Smaller businesses often start with NAS, while larger data centres usually run production systems on SAN or all-flash block storage.

How much usable capacity will I get from my drives?

It depends on the RAID level or protection scheme. RAID 6, for example, uses the capacity of two drives for protection. We can work out the usable capacity of your chosen configuration when we quote.

Do you sell hard drives and SSDs separately?

Yes. We supply enterprise, NAS and desktop hard drives and SSDs from Seagate, Western Digital, Toshiba, Kingston, Micron and other brands, as single units or in volume.

What storage do I need for AI workloads?

AI training needs high-throughput storage so that GPUs are not left waiting for data. Depending on scale, that may be fast NVMe storage inside the server or a parallel storage platform shared across a GPU cluster. Tell us about your workload and we will recommend a design.

Is a NAS enough to back up my business?

A NAS makes a good backup target, but it should not hold your only copy. Follow the 3-2-1 approach, with at least one copy off-site or offline, to protect against hardware failure, theft and ransomware.
